Classic Catholic Wedding in Washington, DC – Kelsey & Jon

Weddings

Kelsey & Jon had a classic spring wedding day with a Catholic Ceremony in Washington, DC and fun-filled reception at Hummingbird in Old Town, Alexandria. Continuing with the trend of rainy May weddings this year, Kelsey & Jon did have to contend with some rain. Not only that, but a large protest at the Supreme Court right around the block from their ceremony made the day extra interesting! We planned a variety of contingencies – since we originally planned wedding party photos at the Capitol! – so we were prepared for anything. The schedule ended up not quite as expected, but due to the unexpected change of plans the two were able to visit one of their favorite Capitol Hill bar, The Union Pub, with their wedding party, which made the day even more special for them!

Their wedding day began with getting ready in Old Town, Alexandria. Jon and his groomsmen got ready at Hotel Indigo and enjoyed a relaxed morning. Kelsey selected The George of Old Town’s George Suite, which is a photographer’s dream! Filled with natural light and bright white furnishings, it made for the absolute perfect getting ready space. The entire property is decorated in such a fun way, and I had fun styling her details and taking some wedding party photos in the common areas.

They selected a lovely dusty blue, pale pink, green, and white palette that was perfect for their May wedding. Karin’s Florist created stunning bouquets and so kindly provided me with some blooms to use in styling Kelsey & Jon’s details. These make the world of difference – just look how beautifully these blooms look with their wedding day details?! I also had to incorporate these adorable gold hummingbirds as a nod to their venue location.

Kelsey & Jon had a full Catholic wedding ceremony at St. Joseph’s of Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. It is such a beautiful church, and I especially loved the blue starry ceiling! Their friends and family participated in the ceremony with readings and Jon’s son and father carried the eucharist to the altar. I loved watching Kelsey & Jon steal glances at each other during the ceremony – they are so sweet! After the ceremony we had to abandon our plans of wedding party photos at the Capitol because of the rain and took them at the church instead, and then the wedding party visited Union Pub for a bit before heading back to Old Town. They shared that a quick trip to the bar “felt more like them” and I have to say – this is a great thing on your wedding day. It should be all about you and bring you joy!!

The Hummingbird in Old Town, Alexandria was such a fun and unique venue! White, blue, and green decor made the space feel bright and inviting. Kelsey & Jon selected two signature cocktails for their guests – the Fisher’s Island Lemonade and Smitten Mitten – and served a raw bar and charcuterie, and passed hors d’oeuvres. Big Bad Juju played many favorites, and the guests enjoyed views of the Potomac from the courtyard.

I loved their Newlywed Cookbook which served as their guestbook, where they invited guests to sign messages next to the recipes. Since they love cooking together, I’m sure this will be a treasured heirloom for this couple! Kelsey and Jon shared a first dance to You Are the Best Thing by Ray LaMontagne, and invited their guests to join them on the dancefloor toward the end of the song. Luckily the rain held off all evening (even a little sun broke through!) and the guests were able to enjoy the outdoor space all evening.

Kelsey & Jon also opted to preserve their wedding florals with my Heirloom Bouquet offering! After their wedding, I took Kelsey’s bouquet home with me, styled it, and the Heirloom Bouquet added custom calligraphy, creating a timeless keepsake from their wedding day!

Congratulations, Kelsey & Jon! I wish you both so much happiness in your lives together.
