Supreme Court Engagement Session – Kelsey & Jon

Couples & Engagement

A fall engagement session at the Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. during golden hour

Photographing at the Supreme Court was on my list of dream locations, so I was so thrilled when Kelsey and Jon chose this for their engagement session this fall! The classic white marble has such a DC feel, and there are so many beautiful secondary locations in the area (including with Capitol views!). We had a beautiful early November evening, with warm temperatures, fall color in the trees, and perfectly dreamy golden hour light. We used every last bit of sun during our photos around the Capitol Hill neighborhood where Jon lived when they first met!

Kelsey and Jon took my advice to wear two outfits. Their first berry and navy combination was dressier, and perfectly contrasted against the plentify white marble and fall foliage. They later changed into a more casual outfit with a nod to fall colors. It was perfect for enjoying a walk through the Capitol Hill row houses.

Engagement sessions are so important to me as a photographer! It’s usually the first time we get to meet before your wedding. My couples usually arrive nervous (let’s be real, no one is comfortable in front of the camera right away!) but they warm up quickly. And they end up having such a fun time together! It was a treat to watch Kelsey and Jon together and how they light up when looking at each other. I enjoyed getting to know them better, and hearing about their plans for their wedding.

How they met:

They met right before the pandemic and spent much of their early relationship trying to find fun, COVID-friendly date ideas! They did a virtual painting class, a virtual cooking class with a chef in Italy, virtual wine tastings, long walks around every corner of the DMV area, beach trips, and endless movie nights! Having to be creative was a great way to get to know each other and have fun with new experiences at a very weird time.

How they got engaged:

Kelsey and Jon were on a trip together for a friend’s wedding, and they stayed the night in Edenton, NC. During a walk around the waterfront, Jon suggested they check out the historic lighthouse. Once there, Jon pointed to the water and asked Kelsey if there were dolphins there (which are Kelsey’s favorite!). When Kelsey turned back around, she found Jon on one knee and he proposed! Afterward, they enjoyed a sunset boat ride to celebrate and called friends and family to tell them the good news!

I just loved this fall Supreme Court engagement session! I am truly looking forward to spring and photographing their May 2022 wedding at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Capitol Hill, and reception at the Hummingbird in Old Town, Alexandria! I’m especially excited to create epic wedding portraits for them when we return to the Capitol on their wedding day!
